What is Algae

Algae, also known as phytoplankton, are plant life without roots leaves or flowers. It is estimated that there are more than 25,000 species of algae in existence. Most are mainly marine algae in the oceans; the rest are freshwater algae. Why Eat Algae?

Blue-green algae is a whole food containing a broad and balanced spectrum of vitamins and minerals. In parts of Africa and Central America, algae is a primary source of food. For generations, the Kanembu native of the Lake Chad region of Africa have harvested and eaten blue-green algae using a sun drying process like the one used by the Aztecs who harvested the freshwater algae Spirulina. Kanembu children who are fed algae show no signs of the malnutrition that is common among tribes lacking this wonderful food.

Today's foods are less than whole, often FAR less than whole. Modern plant varieties are frequently selected based on their appearance and shipping qualities rather than nutritional qualities. In cases where foods are selected for nutritional qualities--such as those you might find in health-food stores--the nutritional quality of the produce is still dependant on the nutrients in the soils in which they were grown. Unfortunately, our soils have been greatly depleted of minerals and nutrients as a result of topsoil erosion and intensive cultivation practices, among other factors. For example, to get the same iron content as one bowl of 1948 spinach, you'd have to eat 75 bowls of spinach today!

In recognition of the deficiencies in our foods people are increasingly turning to supplements. The problem with this approach is, supplements are usually created by breaking whole elements into their components and isolating them using man-made chemical processes: in most cases they are products of a factory! Scientists disagree on the efficacy of this process, but many believe that this process of division renders the isolated elements largely ineffective, much as an arm separated from its body. Having taken Cell Tech algae for several months I find my energy has increased dramatically.
